Financing solar solutions to power Africa’s hospitals

Reliable energy transforms healthcare. We help our partners to access the finance they need to solarise facilities that serve vulnerable populations.

The Problem

Healthcare energy crisis

60% of hospitals in sub - Saharan Africa lack reliable electricity.

Disrupted care

A hospital power cut of 2hrs can increase mortality by 43%

Alternatives are expensive

Hospitals overspend on dirty diesel generators.

Financial challenges

Hospitals cannot access finance to pay upfront costs due to lack of trust.

Transforming Healthcare in Africa with Solar Solutions

Solution

The SHIELD project significantly enhances hospital resilience by providing reliable solar energy, reducing dependency on diesel, cutting carbon emissions, lowering operational costs, and ensuring uninterrupted critical health services for millions of patients annually.

Practical Solar Installations

Custom-designed solar systems for hospitals — ensuring consistent power for critical operations like surgical lighting, refrigeration for vaccines, and neonatal care.

Smart Financing Models

We offer innovative financing models, including donor partnerships, leasing, and outcome-based funding — helping hospitals access clean energy without large upfront costs.

Digital REC Offerings

Through our digital Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), hospitals can receive support from global partners committed to sustainable development and clean energy access.

Our Mission and Vision

SHIELD's mission is to solarise every large hospital in Africa

Many hospitals in Africa lack reliable electricity, disrupting critical care.

Our Mission is to solarise every large hospital in Africa.

Our Vision is to help hospitals access finance and clean energy solutions so that they can provide better, more reliable, and cheaper care.

Improving healthcare access and outcomes

Delivering clean, reliable solar power

Reducing emissions with sustainable energy

Impact

The Meru Hospital project was completed in November 2024 and has been supplying high quality, low cost, uninterrupted and entirely sustainable energy since inception.

The project has created savings of $6k/month. This money has been redirected into paying for cancer treatments and a high dependency unit.

Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital

Projected 100+ tons CO₂ emissions avoided annually

228 kW day -time, on -grid solar system installed,

Projected $75,000 hospital energy savings annually
